Retention Certificate / Beibehaltungsgenehmigung (NEW LAW June 27, 2024) – Petra Korn

Retention Certificate / Beibehaltungsgenehmigung (NEW LAW June 27, 2024)

Retention Certificate / Beibehaltungsgenehmigung (NEW LAW June 27, 2024)

Multiple nationality is thus generally accepted in Germany since June 27, 2024. This means that by taking on another citizenship through naturalization (e.g. N400 in the USA) you do NOT lose your German citizenship. Thus, the necessity to obtain a retention certificate from Germany prior to taking on another citizenship does not exist any longer after June 27, 2024.

Retention certificates issued up until June 26, 2024:

If you have obtained a retention certificate between January 1, 2000 and June 26, 2024 it is valid based on the old law, and prevented the loss of your German citizenship.

IMPORTANT: Please keep and safely store your retention certificate along with the naturalization certificate. It serves as proof that you can have both citizenships and that you did not lose your German citizenship. Being able to prove this can be necessary even many years later, and may also be important for your children/relatives.
